Christiana Figueres - UNFCCC Executive Secretary

Thoughts from newly elected UNFCCC Executive Secretary

by Miguel Sossa on November 29, 2010

As doors open at today’s convention, newly elected UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres of Costa Rica, is already making headlines. Instead of focusing on promoting the hope of a long-standing legal accord, she has channeled her vision for the convention’s success into these four areas of accomplishment:

  1. Countries will leave with a heightened desire to act against global warming
  2. Clean technology knowledge will be passed from rich countries to poor countries
  3. Countries will align on creating a long-term development fund for pursuing climate change initiatives
  4. Organizing mechanisms to reduce carbon emissions as a result of deforestation (As a side note, though no rainforest, Cancun appeared to have a vast amount of green forests from the air, so this may be a good place to kick off the discussion.)

We will see how far Executive Secretary Figueres’ objectives go over the next few weeks. In the meantime, follow her latest comments and all of the other live webcasts at the UNFCCC site located at
